Finally got all the pieces of the 243AI build together. I've been contemplating glass options the last few days and wanted to get some opinions.

This will be a PIG. It wiil not be carried. Mainly it will be a fun long range setup for shots up to 1000. I am leaning MarkIV 3.5-10X40/M1. How would you roll?

I really dig that scope. Think it's one of those great bargains for a real performer...

The NF setups are not going to be in the budget. As a matter of fact, I was hoping to score a used MarkIV. Money is very tight at the moment.

The MK4 M1 3.5-10x is my favorite variable by a mile,but a MK4 M1 straight 10x ain't too hard to take on a PIG..................

I ended up with a VX-II 6-18x in a buy/trade/swap deal, and I sent it to Leupold for the M1 treatment:

Here is the whole rifle before the M1's (.223AI, 1-8 Pacnor, A5):

The rifle now wears a Seekins 20MOA base and rings. Holy shit are they ever nice!

What's up with the Vari-X III Tactical version of same? Differences and such.
The "one" I have has covered turrets not m1's.
That may or may not be strange as I don't know anything about them, but he one's I found online have the M1's.

I was wondering if they were the predecessor the MarkIV or something else all together.

I have a Vari-X III Tact. 3.5-10X40 and you can dig them up for a song and a dance. 1" tubed VariX III with target turrets North and East. I found mine for 400$ shipped to my door.

Its far from a Mark 4 3.5-10 but its not a terrible option to have on your reloading bench :D

I like mine but also like the 4.5-15 on the green rifle.

The 3.5-10 is almost 2" longer for some reason.

So...is the consensus that 10X is enough magnification or will it be a little lacking? Beginning to think about the 16X MarkIV.

I'm not even sure how often I will get the opportunity to stretch it out to the 800-1000 range, but I want to be properly equipped for such times.

Stick how do you like that 16X? I had an 8.5-25 Mark 4 and it ranks up there with "giant expensive pieces of shit" in my books. The eye box on it made me think I was gunning an Elite 3200 only worse.

Is the 16's eye box more 6X42-ish?

I've had several 16x's and the Mk4 is easily the best of the lot. Fixed glass is always friendlier than zooms, when talking a static eyebox and the Mk4 16's eye-relief in conjunction with same,is rather user friendly.

I drive it on a fast twist Hart spouted 22-250AI in a return handle and think highly of the system..............

Went ahead and grabbed the 10X MarkIV(duplex/M1s) off of sampleslist. It's looks to be an older vintage but is in good shape. Gave $750 for it.

I think the leupie's might have better glass. They seem clearer to me. ;however, the turret on the night force is 3 times as good.

+1 for the Leupie MK 4. Got a couple of them and no complaints.

NF prolly has a slight edge optically. But not by much.

Never fucked with turrets on either of the two I poked a glance through. One was on a 338 Lapua and a 50 BMG I shot.

Didn't want to start another thread so I'll just continue here.

Stopped by a gun shop today looking to see what they had on hand in the way of scopes and ask the guys a question about my Kimber TLE. While looking at scopes and telling the guy which ones I'm looking for he tells me Mark (I don't know Mark, I assume he works there time to time) has a used Mark IV fixed 10X for sale. I ask how much, he says $500. I ask to see it.

Looks legit. M1's feel like they might have a touch of mush but are also quite audible. Then I bring it up to my eye and I don't even see a reticle.
After finding proper eye relief and tuning the eyepiece I can barely see it, Target Dot. FUCK!

I know from what I see in the store I don't like it but maybe in the field it will be useable. Really wasn't looking for another 10X but the price is definitely right.

Questions:

What would I need to look for that would tell me to run?

What does a reticle swap run these days?
