Got a spare 700, and LSS chassis sitting around. I'm thinking it's time to build a .223AI truck gun. The whole plan is to make the deal as user friendly as possible. I'm thinking 18", 1-8" for a steady diet of 75 eld. What contour tube is going to make this be the one I want to grab every time?

I had the same setup in 6x45 with a Remington sporter contour.

I liked it as it was so I guess either a dupe or probably a #3 would work fine

I have a barrelled action w/ a Rock #3 @ 22". Think I'll bolt it in to see how she feels. I was thinking going shorter, and a tad thicker, but no point if it ends up wrong.

I'd go Greyboe Terrain from RHR,wearing a Hawkins DBM for $399. Then I'd call James and go 7" 223/223AI(whatever he had on the shelf),chop to a length that suited and feed it 88's.

Pull the rearmost forearm stud and rock that bitch..............

Got James on the horn yesterday and a 7" 223 Match Bull spout, will beat me home. I'll chop at 21" or so and launch 88's expressly.

Prolly won't suck.............(grin)

Do you anticipate being able to reach the lands and be within MDT mag restrictions with that freebore?

I've got the same 7-twist 223 match in a Varmint contour and have yet to try 88's. I'll be very interested to hear of your results.

There's .090" freebore on that reamer, which is a pretty friendly place.

I'll take pics,once I'm home and it's assembled.............

I was under the impression the Terrain was pretty heavy, but maybe not? I should have said originally, but the the kiddos are getting to the age when they are going to need gub to flog on, and they may as well be forming brass for me while they are at it.I'm also thinking the adjustable LOP on the LSS can't hurt either.

I missed the kids part. The Terrain certainly has added mass and wouldn't be the best suited there(nor close).

The handy/dandy Chassis build will connect the dots you want and let everyone play. Had a 18" fluted Rem Mag Sporter 223AI in a LSS and it didn't suck. I personally prefer a "real" stock's ergo's,but for what you are trying to do...a chassis will reliably get you there.

Stay OEM recoil lug,as the LSS mortise is trite(as compared to a XHCG and others of the ilk). Cheek risers are easily arranged,if needed and I'm a fan of the RSS self-adhesive neoprene version,if only to fight the bite of cold weather.

Load mags and turn 'em loose.............(grin)

I suppose the first step is to let the kiddos give the chassis a try. Once we've confirmed compatability, we'll bolt something into it and turn them loose.

Yank.

Align.

Headspaced to a nice Lot of brass.

A touch of objective relief.

88 Smooch at 2.545" COAL.

Shoot at 26",clock same and chop to 21".

Nothing to it....................

WTF! I didn't get a sticker...

Cuttin'er close for the mags but still good news. So I'm getting 2970 fps with 75s in a fresh(20 rds) 26" tube & lever. Are the 88's worth trying considering the reduced speed?

I'm thinking 6BR type ballistics for target purposes. Possible?

FYI, for those interested. The 2970 fps with 75s in a 26" tube is with naked ELDs and 26.0 grains of lever. It'll likely gain some more speed. The CBI barrel shot small clusters the whole way there. Have shot six of them now and they all hammer.

This receiver is HORRIBLE for 'pin slop.

Bumped halfa grain and swapped to a Gre-Tan bushed bolt. Can you tell?(grin)

The (3) rounds shot at greater charge weight, with the bushed bolt, ain't too hard to pick outta da' crowd.

If a .545 BC at 2680fps sucks....don't do it..................(grin)

What mags are you fighting?

Just opened up an MDT,for 88 land chasin' room. 1/4 chain file and about 10 seconds of "work". Mags are tapered and COAL increase,as you gain inner depth.

No thang................

I have a couple MDT 10s @ 2.550"

Haven't messed with the 88s yet. Good to know I have some breathing room with a little work.

Thank you for the info!

Just did an AM steel 5-rounder to follow suit, for the same rifle. I have it and (5) 10rd MDT's slated for it expressly,so am in purty good shape that way.

Pulled bottom off mag and ground everything flush to the front interior poly wall, then beveled a smidge.

No thang.............

Impressive. I've got to buy some 88's and see if I can make them fit through the Montana when the rebarrel happens. A lot of options on a 6 lb. 223AI that could swallow 88's.

Glad the 88s are working for you Stick.

Big question to me is whether the loss of speed is worth the gain in ass and BC when looking at 75s vs 88s in a 223. I'm not sure I see it in the bulk of my uses. Now in the 22-250AI may be another story

Having choices...has as of yet,to piss me off.(grin)

Velocity gain/loss is lineal. What it costs a 223 going from 75's to 88's,is the same hit a 22-250AI takes.

That one,fucks with heads.............(grin)

Yep.

In Today's atmosphere, you are on the cusp of marginal stability. If it cools off,you are done.

Come grab some to try....................
