Each engine has a Lowrance interface that plugs into the engine's diagnostic port, connected to an N2k backbone via t-connector. My Raymarine unit has a proprietary SeaTalk cable that connects to a Garmin or Lawrence t-connector on the N2k backbone, and after a free software upgrade (I bought a closeout A68 unit that was a few updates back), the Raymarine came to life with engine data and fuel numbers.

The new Garmin unit is connected to the same N2k network, with it's own drop cable to fit a t-connector. When the engines are first turned on, some data shows (or at least looks like it's going to work) but then disappears when the engine is started. I don't get any engine data, so I'm hoping it's a software or settings issue. The data is there, I just need to get the 1040xs to recognize and display it.

I haven't really looked into all of the communications settings, yet, but I had to change the NMEA 0183 settings to get my GPS position to display on my Icom VHF. The default setting was "Garmin" rather than industry standard on COM Port 1. I'm hoping it's something minor like this that's keeping the 1040 from reading engine data.

I have a Yamaha fuel management gauge that I still need to connect, so I'm not really concerned about getting the Garmin to display fuel data. I just need to find a manual for the Yamaha gauge, and I should be good-to-go.

My engine is pre-CommandLink, but this interface works well with the Lowrance digital gauges (LMF200 and LMF400) and the Raymarine A68.

I would not count on much in the way of customer service from Lowrance, by the way. The few times I've used them (via phone or e-mail) the experiences were pretty awful. The folks at Raymarine, on the other hand, were good-to-go!

It's the chirp unit. A $180 transducer from Gil will get you in the game if you don't want side view.
